HIll Country Middle School MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL KATHLEEN SULLIVAN February 2, 2018 Career Fair Tuesday, our 8th grade students had the chance to interview 50 different presenters during our Career Fair. We had a variety of careers represented from all walks of life! This was the culminating activity for the career unit the counseling staff has shared with our 8th grade students. In something I read recently from the Gallop Organization, factors like hope, engagement and well-being are key factors that drive student grades, achievement scores, retention, and future employment. These are all nontangible things that are not specifically taught. This career unit helped build hopefulness in our students, according to The Gallup definition, by tapping in to their ideas and energy about the future. I encourage you to visit with your 8th grader about the speakers they visited with yesterday and the impact that this had on them. A big thank you to our parents who helped, and a special shout out to Jacqueline Benitez who organized the whole event. We also want to thank all of our presenters for taking the time out of their busy schedules to come and speak with our eighth graders. Our students had a wonderful time and learned so much about the many careers represented!
The UIL Academic teams have been formed and have begun practicing, but several teams still need members to represent Hill Country Middle School. These events are a great way to learn and practice a new skill or master a skill students already know; they also are a great addition to club and school applications. The following teams and coaches need members in various grade levels. Parents and students should talk about which team is the best fit and contact the coach of that team.

SCHOOL CALENDAR HEALTHY STUDENTS Social-Awareness Social-Awareness and caring for others is the EISD SEL focus for the third nine weeks. Empathy is being able to understand and value someone else's perspective and having compassion for others even when they are different from ourselves. One of the ways parents can support their teens with tolerance and acceptance is to continue to have an open dialogue. "Providing messages that promote healthy self-esteem can go a long way to encourage [teens] to embrace differences in [themselves] and others". We can support our teens in understanding and accepting others by initiating conversations around relevant current issues. Our teens are watching and listening to how we treat others.
