HIll Country Middle School MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL KATHLEEN SULLIVAN May 11, 2018 HCMS Teacher of the Year
I am so excited to announce that Ms. Sheeba Arthur is the Hill Country Middle School Educator of the Year! Her students will tell you she is one of the most dedicated teachers ever! Ms. Arthur encourages all of her students and accepts nothing but their best. She is continually working to make sure her students understand difficult concepts in Algebra and Geometry, and will work with students before or after school to help them understand and be successful.
Ms. Arthur comes from a family of educators. She started her career in India teaching computer science, liking it…but not loving it. When she came from India to the United States, she found a job teaching developmental math at Dallas Community College…and loved it! She was thrilled to have found her true calling, her personal passion, and has been a full-time math teacher for the past eleven years, the most recent five at Hill Country.
This extraordinary educator puts her heart and soul into her classroom and lovingly calls her students "her little ones." For her, the ultimate success is when her students are succeeding. In fact, she has even inspired one former student to become a math teacher! Ms. Arthur has the ability to hold high standards and expectations, while at the same time making sure her students know she cares for every single one of them. She is a phenomenal teacher, and I am continually in awe of her dedication to her discipline and her compassion for her students. We are grateful Ms. Arthur has chosen to teach at Hill Country!

SCHOOL CALENDAR HEALTHY STUDENTS One way to support your teen in growing into a successful adult is to teach responsible decision making. In order for teens to learn the skill of making responsible decisions, the teen must have the opportunity to make a decision and experience the consequences of his/her own decision. Young people may make quick decisions that are “rash, egocentric and short-sighted” without fully exploring the impact of their decision. They may even make a poor choice that has painful consequences. As parents it is difficult to watch our children struggle with consequences; however, it is our role as caring parents to do so. Teaching decision-making is a “complex process that takes years to master”. Read the article Raising Good Decision Makers by Dr. Jim Taylor to learn more about how to teach your teen the skill of decision-making. The Gift of Failure: How the Best Parents Learn to Let Go So Their Children Can Succeed by Jessica Lahey and How to Raise an Adult: Break Free of the Overparenting Trap and Prepare Your Kid for Success by Julie Lythcott-Haims are two books that address the importance of allowing children to experience the consequences of their actions.
