January 252019 MESSAGE FROM PRINCIPAL KATHLEEN SULLIVAN Choice and Voice for our Middle Schoolers Hard to believe, but next week we begin discussing course selections for our next school year. Our counselors have been sending out information to you regarding timelines. One of my favorite aspects of HCMS is the variety of electives we have for our students. We really encourage students to try new things and explore different interests in middle school, with the hope that they find something about which they are passionate. Such exploration is especially important at this age when our students are trying to find their own identity and independence. I encourage you to go to the "Counselors" section of our web page to review the many elective choices with your child(ren). Please note there are no right or wrong choices when it comes to selecting courses, and if your child selects something that you find surprising or "not their norm," encourage them as they branch out. For example, if your shy and quiet 6th grader signs up for drama next year, support the choice to take a risk. In the coming weeks, counselors will be going into classes for students to register. In May we will get student verification sheets to review what they chose to see if they want to make any changes. For our current 8th graders, WHS will be reaching out to you all about the 8th to 9th grade transition.
